MELEXIS announced the launch of the new absolute magnetic encoder chip MLX90382. This chip is small in size, has excellent resistance to stray magnetic fields, supports flexible sensing on and off-axis, and can achieve seamless integration including integration with micro motors. With its up to 14-bit resolution, differential output and a wide speed range of up to 200k e-RPM, this product is ideal for industrial automation, robotics and mobile solutions.
As the application range of robotics and automation solutions continues to expand, from a small range of professional applications to more daily scenarios, the demand for encoders that can provide accurate and cost-effective motion feedback in these systems has also increased. High-speed encoder feedback mechanisms are critical to ensure the correct operation and safety performance of motor-driven applications such as robotic arms, automatic packaging machines, and industrial knitting machines.
The latest development of Melexis Triaxis® technology
The MLX90382 is a magnetic position sensor that integrates a Hall magnetic front end, an analog-to-digital converter, zero-latency on-chip digital signal processing functions, and multiple output drivers. The device uses the latest developments in Melexis Triaxis® technology, applying its expertise in magnetic position sensing to high-speed encoder devices. By detecting the three components of magnetic flux density (Bx, By and Bz) and measuring the differential magnetic field on the Z axis, the MLX90382 is able to accurately track absolute angular position and speed. In addition, its speed can reach 200,000rpm, and its stray magnetic field immunity is strong, with a maximum of 360 degrees of stray magnetic field immunity (corresponding to a magnetic field strength of 4kA/m).
The MLX90382 can effectively solve the common assembly problems in complex motor drive applications, supporting flexible installation on and off the axis, providing greater convenience for users. This feature enables the chip to support hollow shaft applications, allowing harnesses or other components to pass through the shaft without interfering with the encoder's feedback, thereby reducing design complexity and promoting technological innovation to a certain extent.
The MLX90382 uses a small standard single-chip 4x 4mm2 QFN-24 package, is RoHS-compliant, and supports 5V and 3.3V applications. Both models are certified to AEC-Q100 (Grade 0) standards, ensuring product reliability. In addition, the chip supports SIL2 level safety integration standards when configured on the axis.
The MLX90382 offers five different output modes designed to meet a wide range of application needs. These output modes include industry-standard differential ABI/UVW interface for incremental angle output, UVW signal simulation interface commonly used for BLDC motors, PWM interface, configurable SPI interface and SSI interface. The sensor has an operating temperature range of -40℃ to 150℃, which is very suitable for harsh environmental conditions.
Atanas Dikov, Regional Marketing Manager at Melexis, said: "The MLX90382 not only fully demonstrates the value of Melexis Triaxis® technology, but also marks our successful application of it in the field of magnetic rotary encoders. This exciting new product will become an important member of our product line. It will not only help promote innovation in various robotics and motor drive applications, but will also continue to work with high accuracy and reliability for many years to come."
